The Route at a Glance
The journey uses the N8, a smooth two-lane road that leaves Marrakech heading west past the international airport, crosses flat, scrubby plains dotted with argan trees, and arrives in Essaouira through the pine forests outside town. It is one of the easiest roads in Morocco — no mountain passes, no hairpins, just long straight stretches that make the 175 kilometres a calm two-and-a-half-hour drive at legal speed.
Three things actually slow you down: police checkpoints (which happen roughly every 40 kilometres), the heavy traffic leaving Marrakech in the morning, and fuel or comfort stops. Buses add scheduled stops at Chichaoua and often the airport, which is why they take closer to three hours despite the same distance. There are no tolls on this road, so the only extra costs are fuel and, if you take a private car, a small parking or airport fee at the ends.
Local tip: Leave Marrakech by 9:00. The traffic stack near the airport thins out after the morning rush, and you will be at the Essaouira fish market in time for lunch.
The Cheap Options: Grand Taxi & Bus
The shared grand taxi
The grand taxi is Morocco's classic intercity ride: a big Mercedes from the 1990s, painted white, that leaves the Bab Doukkala taxi rank in Marrakech when it has six passengers. It costs roughly 8 to 10 euros per seat and takes about two and a half hours, dropping you at the edge of Essaouira's medina. It is the cheapest way to travel and wonderfully authentic — but you will share the back seat, the driver stops only when someone needs a comfort break, and you should agree on the price per person before the engine starts.
Two practical notes on the grand taxi. First, the front passenger seat costs more than the middle row — roughly double — because it is the most comfortable spot, so ask before claiming it. Second, factor in a couple of kilometres of walking: the taxis stop at the Bab Doukkala side of town, so unless your accommodation is near the port you will take a short petit taxi ride for the last leg. With six people and their luggage crammed into an old Mercedes, travel light or buy the extra seat.
The CTM and Supratours bus
For a few euros more, the two big coach companies — CTM and Supratours — run several direct departures a day from the Gare Routière de Bab Doukkala. Tickets are around 8 to 12 euros, coaches are air-conditioned and comfortable, and you can buy a seat in advance online, which guarantees you do not wait for a taxi to fill. The trade-offs: the bus takes three to three and a half hours and stops at Chichaoua, and it lets you off at the bus station on the edge of town, from where the medina is a short walk or a 15-euro local taxi ride if your bags are heavy.
What the stations are really like: the Bab Doukkala bus station in Marrakech is a working transport hub, so arrive 20 minutes early, hold your ticket and your passport at the gate, and ignore the luggage touts who try to "help" with your bags for a fee — the official staff wear uniforms. In Essaouira, the Supratours and CTM coaches arrive near the same terminal, and the last buses of the day leave earlier than you might expect, so if you are taking the bus back, buy the return ticket the same morning you arrive.
The Comfort Options: Private Taxi & Rental Car
The private taxi transfer
This is the option our passengers book most often, and the one we run ourselves. For a family with car seats or a group of four splitting the fare, the per-person cost lands close to a shared taxi with none of the compromises.
It also handles the return trip the same way. Rental car
Renting a car in Marrakech costs about 35 to 60 euros a day and gives you total independence — you can stop in Chichaoua, visit an argan cooperative or push on to Sidi Kaouki the same afternoon. Add fuel (about 15 euros for the round trip) and consider the realities: international car hire in Morocco comes with aggressive insurance upsells, police checkpoints where documentation must be perfect, and parking inside Essaouira's medina is impossible — you will leave the car in a guarded lot outside the walls. For a week-long coastal road trip it makes sense; for a single day trip it rarely pays off.
If you do drive, two habits will keep you out of trouble. Slow down at every checkpoint sign — the police use the radar openly on this road and fines are issued on the spot — and keep your rental papers, passport and licence where you can reach them quickly. In Essaouira, choose one of the guarded lots on Avenue Mohammed V rather than the curb, because the medina streets are pedestrian-only and the fine for entering them is higher than a week of parking fees.
Flying: The Third Option
There is no direct flight between Marrakech and Essaouira, so the only way to fly is to route through Casablanca — a plane journey that takes a couple of hours in total but needs a full half-day for check-in, transfers and connections, and costs more than a private taxi. Unless you are already in Casablanca, flying is strictly worse than driving. What matters for most visitors is that Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU) exists at all: it runs flights to Paris and a few European cities, so if you arrive directly in Essaouira by air, a quick Essaouira airport transfer from 15 euros will meet you at the terminal.

Once you know your priorities the choice writes itself. Budget travellers and backpackers should take the grand taxi or the bus and save the difference for seafood dinners. Families, honeymooners and anyone with more than a day bag should book the private taxi — the fixed 69-euro price removes the single biggest source of transport stress in Morocco, and the door-to-door service is worth the premium. Self-drivers should rent only if they are touring the wider coast.
Time of day changes the maths too. As a day trip, Essaouira needs an early start and a late return — the last useful bus is mid-afternoon, which forces you to rush lunch, whereas a private taxi with a driver who waits for you gives the full afternoon by the port before heading back. Travellers staying overnight barely notice the difference, because the grand taxi and bus still have you there by lunch.
