Mogador is the historic Portuguese name for Essaouira, and the airport borrows it for its code and identity. Today the airport operates on a small scale — a handful of departures and arrivals each day, clustered mostly around early morning and late afternoon.
You will notice two things immediately on arrival. First, the approach is beautiful: the plane banks over the Atlantic, and on a clear day you can see the medina's white walls and the ramparts before touchdown. Second, the terminal is genuinely small. Baggage comes off a single carousel, and within ten minutes of landing you can be standing outside with your bags, blinking into the sun.
That speed cuts both ways. On a quiet Tuesday, you may be the only flight of the hour. But when several flights land close together — common in summer when budget carriers converge — the tiny arrivals hall fills quickly. Do not worry; you will not be stuck long, but do not plan on browsing a duty-free shop while you wait for your bags.
The runway itself is worth a note for travellers with cameras: it runs almost parallel to the coast, and on final approach you are treated to a sweep of beach, lagoon and ramparts that no other airport in Morocco quite matches. Getting From the Airport to Essaouira
There is no airport bus and no train. Your options are a pre-booked private transfer, an official taxi from the rank outside the terminal, or a rental car. The drive takes about 20 minutes on the P2045, a smooth two-lane road that curves through argan woodland and past a couple of beach resorts before reaching the edge of town.
At the taxi rank you will find a mix of the town's petit and grand taxis. Expect to be quoted somewhere between 150 and 250 dirham (about 15 to 25 euros) for the trip to the medina. Negotiation is normal, but there is little room to bargain far below 150 dirham on a route with no competition. The cars are older, there are no seat belts in the back of some petit taxis, and the drivers may stop to pick up a second fare if you let them. It works, but it is not the calmest welcome to a holiday.
The road itself is a pleasant introduction to the region. For the first ten minutes you climb gently through argan woodland where goats scramble among the branches, then you drop to the coastal plain past the southern beaches and the hotel zone. At the gates of town the ramparts appear suddenly — white and formidable against the blue — the moment most first-time visitors reach for their phones.

Look for the driver holding a board with your name just outside the arrivals exit — not the crowd of unofficial drivers by the car park. Licensed transfer drivers have permits and will never ask you to follow them across the road to an unmarked vehicle.
